I am interested in how people use and manage forests in tropical countries, especially non-timber forest products. For more than three and half years I worked with rural communities on various conservation projects. This experience helped pave my way to UF and eventually to the Brazilian Amazon. I completed my master’s research in Acre, Brazil, which focused on local perceptions of a logging project inside the Chico Mendes Extractive Reserve, a sustainable-use protected area where commercial logging activities are in their incipient stages. My research topic is social contention and environmental change linked to hydroelectric dams in Amazonia. Since 1998, Carolina has been a professor in the Biology Department, Rondônia Federal University, coordinating the Icthiology and Fisheries Laboratory and a member of the Ação Ecológica Guaporé (ECOPORÉ), a Brazilian NGO. She has worked for ~15 years in the fields of environmental conservation and development of the Amazonian regions in Brazil. Claudio is a co-founder and Vice-President of the Board of IPÊ – Instituto de Pesquisas Ecológicas (Institute for Ecological Research) in Brazil and sits on the board of numerous NGOs and private companies that have a social and environmental innovation profile. In 2003 Claudio, together with his wife Suzana were recognized as conservation heroes of the planet by Time Magazine and in 2009 the couple was selected Social Entrepreneurs of the year by Folha de São Paulo and Schwab Foundation (World Economic Forum). Between 1998 and 2014 his work toward the protection of endangered species and their habitats, and for training young conservationists was instrumental in receiving the Henry Ford Award for Conservation, the Whitley Continuation Award of the Royal Geographic Society, the Society for Conservation Biology Achievement Award and the Distinguished Alumnus Award of the University of Florida. Claudio has co-authored or edited four books and has more than 40 articles published in national and international journals. My interests are centered on the study of wildlife populations, particularly mammals, and the effects of human activities on these organisms. In my research, I try to integrate multiple scales of analysis that can explain cascading effects on natural landscapes. Some specific topics that interest me are: human-wildlife conflicts, wildlife use and sustainability, and the effects of road networks on wildlife populations and functionality of natural ecosystems.
