Robinson Botero-Arias, PhD candidate in UF’s Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation in collaboration with Boris Marioni (lead author), Marcela Magalhaes, José de Sousa Silva E. Júnior, and Ronis da Silveira, recently published a note on the diet of Melanosuchus niger, the Black Caiman in Herpetological Review, vol. 50 (3).  Here they report on food items found in 33 crocodilian stomachs and the new finding of a well-preserved leg of a howler monkey (Alouatta puruensis)!  Although they can only speculate on whether this was result of a predation by caimans or opportunistic feeding on an already dead animal, it is a remarkable finding that adds new natural history information about this top predator.
